Decorate In Style!

It’s your first holiday season in your new house (or maybe you just want to change up your current style,) either way, you couldn’t be more excited!  You’ve dreamed about this day since starting your home buying odyssey and now you want to actually make your house look awesome.  But here is the dilemma; do you keep it simple or blow up your electric bill by installing every strand of holiday lights your local hardware store has to offer?

First thing to remember is that how you decorate should represent your likes and style. If you aren’t real sure where to start or don’t really have a well-defined style, check out other local Washington homes.  Start by talking to your neighbors to see what works for them.  Tour other neighborhoods and find aspects and decorating styles you like and try to recreate them on your home.

If you are still unsure about style, try starting with a few simple decorating staples; Lights and a wreath.  A simple wreath on the front door adds warmth to your home.  Light strands are an effective way to add cheeriness to your architecture.  Whether white, clear or colored, light strands can make your lovely house stand out and show off the beauty of your home.

Once you’ve gotten these decorations in place, consider adding a little garland around your door frame or around railings on your front porch (if you have any).  You will be surprised how cheery and classy your home will look with a few simple decorations!

Once you’ve decided on your decorations, make sure to prep them for unpredictable weather.  Winter is notorious for unforgiving weather and you don’t want to be forced to reattach any decorations that fall off when the weather turns unfriendly.  Check your local hardware store for quality hooks and attachments to secure any lights, garlands and wreaths.  If you have large inflatable characters on your front lawn follow instructions to properly anchor them to the ground to avoid them falling over or ending up in your neighbor’s yard.  Make sure any electrical connections are covered and water-tight in the event of rain or snow.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun with decorating your house!  This is your home and it should reflect the joy and happiness you feel during the holiday season.  So get out there and make your home look festive!

Happy Holidays...Go out and make someone smile!
